MOSAIC PROJECT TAIPEI

///// Mosaic Project is a research and stickers edition started in 2016 in South Korea. The small geometrical mosaic tiles were a common material from 1960 to 1980 in Asia but the recent transformations of the cities make them rare. After 2 months of research and classification in Taipei, free stickers reproducing the mosaics will be distributed to the visitors. Taipei Monolith, reproducing Taipei modern architecture staircase, will be temporarily installed as a parasite element in Treasure Hill…

■ Guest Curator’s Brief Introduction

Mosaic Project Taipei started during Julien’s project in South Korea in 2016. By observing the urban architecture and reading historical materials, the artist discovered that mosaic tiles were common in Asia between 1960 and 1980. The development of urban planning in many large Asian cities resulted in the richly-designed mosaic being replaced by grey or plain tiled walls, and the unique characters of cities have gradually vanished. During this residence in Taipei, the artist will create an impressionable fake tile wall, skillfully merging the local landscape of Treasure Hill with the work.

■ 藝術家自述
「馬賽克計畫」是藝術家 2016 年在南韓開始的研究計畫。在 1960 至1980 年代間，小型的幾何馬賽克在亞洲相當流行，然而近期因為都市更新計畫使馬賽克逐漸消失。藝術家在台北進行了為期兩個月的研究和分類，將在台北所找到的馬賽克圖案印製成貼紙，免費發放給觀眾。同時，藝術家悄悄將象徵台北現代階梯建築的限地製作的裝置，寄生於寶藏巖村內山城 53 屋頂平台上…

馬賽克計畫始於藝術家 2016 年在南韓的計畫，他觀察大量的城市建築，並且進行歷史的閱讀發現在 1960 到 1980 年代這樣幾何的馬賽克磁磚在亞洲非常普遍。這發生在亞洲的多個大城，都市計畫的發展使各異其趣的馬賽克牆面裝飾已經被灰色或是素淨的磁磚牆所取代，大城市的趨同性使傳統花樣和建築的自由性消失了。在這次的台北駐村創作，藝術家將打造一個使人印象深刻的馬賽克偽建築，巧妙地與深具個性的寶藏巖聚落空間結合。
