(o)fences

Sentence sticked on a construction wall in Seoul / 2016

This project comes from the presence in Seoul of areas surrounded by white walls behind which, after destruction of a district of townhouses, towers of apartments are built. These walls are usually white and blank, the only information about the site is usually near by the main entrance. The length of these walls reaching sometimes several kilometers, the citizens often walk along those white fences which can also suddenly block a street. On the internet, most of the websites I could visit advertised apartment building companies. Their communication proposing a dreamlife that widely diverge of the white zones created in the city during the many months of destruction and construction. The phrases of (o)fences are only from these websites. They are the own communication of the apartment companies. Sticking those sentences on the walls surrounding the construction sites, on those blank surfaces decontextualize them, reinforce their absurd, ironic or simply meaningless message.

프랑스 작가 줄리앙 코와네는 한국의 도시 거리를 탐험하며 20년 동안 진행된 건축의 표준화 과정과 건물의 특징을 관찰했다. 이 과정에서 작가는 도시의 다양한 공간에서 볼 수 있었던 60년대 – 70년대 후반에 제작된 작은 기하학적 문양의 타일에 주목한다. 주택의 현관 입구를 둘러싸는 모자이크 타일은 오래된 주택들이 철거되며 사라지고 이제는 점점 찾아보기 어렵다. ‘모자이크 프로젝트‘는 지금 한국의 도시 풍경에 이러한 시각적 요소들을 일시적으로 재등장시킨다. 몇 개를 조합하면 주택의 타일 문양이 되는 스티커를 전시 기간 동안 관객에게 배포하고, 관객은 자유롭게 자신이 원하는 장소에 이 스티커를 붙일 수 있다. 이렇게 부착된 스티커는 과거에 유행했던 모자이크 타일이 도시의 벽 위에 다시 나타난 것같은 환영을 만든다.
