MOSAIC PROJECT SEOUL / Edition of stickers / 5cmx5cm / Seoul / 2016 / work in progress for the project Micro City Lab, oct.2016

For several months, I have explored the streets of Korean cities, observing the developments, the features of buildings or houses depending on the period, and the increasing architecture standardization for twenty years. I noticed in different places of the Korean cities these small geometric tiles which I see as markers of a period from the 60s to the late 70s. Surrounding the entrance porch of villas, these mosaics now tend to be increasingly rare, to disappear with the destruction of town houses in the cities. It is a small piece of visual heritage which disappears from the urban landscape.
Mosaic Project is a simple way to make reappear temporarily these visual elements in the contemporary urban landscape in Korea. This is a small sticker reproduces the basic module of this mosaic, several stickers together creating a geometric pattern. On the walls of the streets, stickers create the illusion of a reappearance of these mosaics. (, just like most of the existing surfaces covering the walls of modern buildings giving the illusion of real materials (faux marble, faux brick…).

Micro City Lab_참여작가 ‘줄리앙 코와네(Julien Coignet)’의 소식입니다.

줄리앙 코와네는 현재 재개발 대상인 60-80년대 한국 주택이 가진 독특한 양식에 주목하여, 여기서 발견되는 타일 패턴을 모자이크 스티커로 제작했습니다.

최근 아현동, 대림동, 흑석동, 동대문 부근.. 등 서울의 낡은 골목들 다수가 재개발이 되면서 그나마 남아있던 주택양식들도 허물어져가고 있는 상황이지요. 서울에서 타일 패턴이 외장재로 남은 주택을 찾기란 쉽지가 않습니다. 이렇게 눈에 잘 띄지 않는 서울의 좁은 골목들을 작가는 위성지도를 이용해 일일이 리서치한 다음, 실제 장소들을 방문하고 있어요.
