Omission / 2015 / 250x60cm / Installation view / selection of maps, atlases and books of geography about South Korea

The maps, the atlases and the books of geography represent often the dominant ideology of their period of production. For an exhibition this year in Seoul, I selected books edited in France and England from 1880 to 1960, when the colonization was in full swing (France and England had during this period the largests colonized territories). Curious about the way they speak about Korea, I found almost nothing. The only occurrences are included in the « Japanese colonial empire » (the texts show a real sympathy for Japan as their equal in Asia) where the peninsula seems like an empty land.
